The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria in Sofia. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, this 19th century cathedral with a gold-plated dome is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world and second-largest cathedral in Balkan Peninsula. It was built to honour the Russian soldiers who had died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 AD.
Vitosha
Vitosha is a dome-shaped mountain just outside Sofia. It is the closest point for hiking and skiing here, and it also has a meteorological station, some mineral springs and country’s longest cave (18 kms). Vitosha’s coniferous forest is home to 1500 species of plants, 500 species of fungi, 500 species of algae, 326 species of mosses and 200 species of lichens.
The Saint Sofia Church
The Saint Sofia Church is a 6th century church that gave its name to the city. Built over a much older Roman necropolis, this second oldest church in the city is dedicated to Saint Sophia and it depicts him as Christ seated on a rainbow. It also depicts icons of some other noted saints like St. George and St. Vladimir.
The National Historical Museum
Established in 1973, the National Historical Museum in Sofia is Bulgaria's largest museum. It is located in the former house of the former dictator and has an extensive collection of more than 650000 artefacts related to archaeology, fine arts, history and ethnography. The National Historical Museum had organized a special exhibition in 1984 to observe 1300 years of birth of the country.
